Cherrydale's Everyday Organic redefines the neighborhood restaurant

Pie. Tough to miss its blueberry glory on the counter of Everyday Organic in Greenville’s Cherrydale shopping center. The restaurant’s name, which harkens more to health store than eatery, is its straightforward directive: Eat organic, preferably local, foods every day.

Why? The (young) owners, Breighana (25) and Taylor (28) Newnham, both Furman graduates, explain that it was the premature death of Taylor’s father, a cancer victim, that inspired action. “We did a lot of research and recognized that it was likely his poor diet that played a significant role. So we began to eat healthier, mostly organic, foods and noticed a huge improvement in the way we feel, even our skin,” says Breighana. She asserts that everything, down to the spices, is organic (free of harmful chemicals). Instead of hoarding a fountain of youth, the couple wanted to share their insights and heirloom recipes, first opening EO in February 2009. After a brief shutdown, they reopened it in its current, and larger, spot last August because it had outgrown its previous space.

Business continues to boom (bloom?). Lunch is popular—with staples like homemade chicken salad (a best-seller), pimiento cheese, and the Everyday Salad (above), but also unusual items such as croque madame, nachos grande, and quinoa salad. Dinner showcases lunch offerings, as well as two hot specials, such as Monday night’s breakfast-at-dinner or Thursday’s chicken and dumplings (find the weekly lineup online). Vegans and vegetarians will delight: Plenty of veg on the menu, plus tempeh, and the kitchen will always try to oblige.

Gluten-free folks should also rejoice—EO offers GF desserts as well as specialty catering. Vegan, gluten-free, or just plain organic sweets—Key Lime cupcakes, chocolate-chunk cookies, blueberry pie—rest politely on a counter and in old-timey glass jars.

But that’s the spirit of Everyday Organic—a homey place with family recipes that channels a slower, more reflective pace.

More than great food, it’s a different way of life.
